How much attic ventilation do I need?
The standard requirement is 1 square foot of net free ventilating area (NFA) for every 150 square feet of attic floor, the 1/150 rule from IRC Section R806.2. The 2021 IRC permits 1/300 only when both exception conditions are met: upper vents provide 40% to 50% of the NFA and, in Climate Zones 6 through 8, a Class I or II vapor retarder is installed on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling. To work in square inches, multiply the result by 144, since 1 square foot equals 144 square inches.
What is net free area (NFA)?
Net free area is the actual open area of a vent that air can pass through, after subtracting the louvers, screen, and frame. It is always smaller than the vent's physical size and is printed on the packaging in square inches. Sizing by NFA, not by the vent's outside dimensions, is what keeps the calculation honest.
When can I use the 1/300 rule instead of 1/150?
Under the 2021 IRC R806.2 exception, 1/300 applies only when both conditions are met. Upper vents must provide 40% to 50% of the NFA, with the balance in the lower third of the attic, and Climate Zones 6 through 8 also need a Class I or II vapor retarder on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling. This calculator's 50/50 split meets the vent-distribution condition but cannot establish the vapor-retarder condition. Confirm the final design against the locally adopted code.
Why split the ventilation 50/50 between intake and exhaust?
A balanced split lets cool outside air enter low at the soffits and warm, moist air leave high at the ridge, creating a steady convective flow. If exhaust outpaces intake, ridge vents can pull air back down through other roof openings instead of from the soffits, which short-circuits the system. Half intake and half exhaust is the simplest way to stay balanced.
How do I find the NFA of my vents?
Check the product label or spec sheet. A typical 8 by 16 inch soffit vent provides about 9 square inches of NFA, an aluminum box vent about 18 square inches, and ridge vent is rated per linear foot (often 9 to 18 square inches per foot). Enter the per-vent figure, and for ridge vent enter the per-foot NFA and read the vent count as linear feet.
Does this calculator account for the roof pitch or insulation?
No. It applies the IRC R806.2 floor-area rule, which is based on attic floor area alone, and it assumes a balanced 50/50 intake and exhaust split. It does not model roof pitch, soffit depth, baffles, or powered fans. Treat it as a planning estimate and confirm the final design against local code.
