The calculator applies sales tax to the vehicle price minus your trade-in value, which is how most US states assess the tax. A handful of states (California, Hawaii, Virginia) tax the full purchase price instead. Check your state's DMV or tax agency if you need exact figures.

A $35,000 car with $5,000 down, no trade-in, 7% sales tax, $500 in fees, and a 60-month loan at 7% APR gives you $32,950 financed, a monthly payment of $652.45, and about $6,197 in total interest paid over the term.

Longer terms lower the monthly payment but add significant interest and increase the risk of being underwater (owing more than the car is worth). Most consumer finance guidance recommends keeping auto loans at 60 months or less for new vehicles to limit total cost and equity risk.
