Frequently Asked Questions about the Cumulative GPA Calculator
What is the difference between the 4.0 unweighted and 5.0 weighted GPA scales?
This calculator's unweighted mode maps A to 4.0, B to 3.0, C to 2.0, D to 1.0, and F to 0. Its weighted mode adds +1.0 for AP and IB and +0.5 for Honors, capped at 5.0. Schools use different weighting rules, so confirm the mapping before combining it with a reported GPA.
Why does GPA get weighted by credit hours instead of treating courses equally?
Credit hours are the calculator's weights. A 3-credit A contributes 12 quality points and a 1-credit A contributes 4, so the 3-credit course has three times the weight in this calculation. Institutions may define credit hours differently, but use the values printed on your transcript.
What are the typical Latin honors thresholds (cum laude, magna, summa)?
There is no standard national threshold. Institutions may use fixed GPAs, class percentiles, program-specific rules, or no Latin honors. The calculator's labels are internal reference bands only. Use your school's current academic catalog for an official determination.
When does a student go on academic probation?
Probation thresholds and consequences are set by the institution and sometimes by the program. A cumulative GPA below 2.0 is a common trigger, but it is not universal and financial-aid satisfactory-progress rules can differ. Treat the calculator's standing label as a reference, then check the academic catalog and aid policy.
Do Pass/Fail and Withdrawn courses count toward my cumulative GPA?
This calculator excludes both P and W from the cumulative GPA numerator and denominator. Your institution may award earned credits for a passing mark, limit pass/fail credits, or treat withdrawal variants such as WF differently. Follow the transcript and registrar policy when deciding which attempts belong in GPA math.
