Frequently Asked Questions about the Currency Converter

Why does this converter use static rates instead of live ones?
This tool uses the European Central Bank reference rates published on January 30, 2026. The ECB quoted 1 EUR as 1.1919 USD on that date. Treat the result as historical context, not a current transaction quote, and check your provider's rate and fees before a real transfer or payment.
How are cross rates between two non-USD currencies calculated?
All 12 currencies are stored as units per 1 USD. To convert EUR to GBP, the tool computes amount x (RATES[GBP] / RATES[EUR]). With the January 30, 2026 ECB rates, the USD terms cancel to give 0.8662 GBP per EUR. USD is the common pivot, so no separate cross-rate table is needed.
Where can I get real-time exchange rates?
XE.com, Wise, and OANDA all publish mid-market rates updated throughout the day. Your bank's app shows the rate it will actually apply to your transaction, which includes a markup. For interbank reference rates, the European Central Bank publishes daily fixings at ecb.europa.eu.
Do banks and credit cards charge fees on top of the exchange rate?
They can. A provider may apply a rate spread, foreign-transaction fee, transfer fee, or ATM fee. The amounts and combinations vary by account, network, currency, and transaction type, so check the provider's quote and fee schedule.
How accurate is the converted amount for actual transactions?
Treat the result as a historical estimate, not a transaction quote. Market rates move and providers use different spreads and fees, so there is no universal error percentage. Get a current all-in quote from the provider before sending money.
