Frequently Asked Questions about the Pet Medication Dose Calculator
What should I do before using this medication estimate?
Ask a veterinarian before giving or administering any medication to a pet. The calculator cannot assess diagnosis, formulation, interactions, health conditions, species sensitivity, or whether treatment is appropriate. Do not use its output as a prescription.
Can I give my pet a human over-the-counter medication?
Not without veterinary confirmation. Product identity matters as much as the dose. Dramamine Original Formula contains dimenhydrinate, while the calculator's meclizine option is Dramamine Less Drowsy with 25 mg meclizine HCl tablets. Do not substitute one formula for the other. Combination products and inactive ingredients can also make a human product unsafe for a pet.
Why can species, breed, and health history change medication risk?
Animals metabolize drugs differently, and genetic variants, organ disease, pregnancy, age, dehydration, and other medications can alter risk. The calculator does not evaluate those factors. A veterinarian must confirm the product, concentration, route, and dose for the individual pet.
When does my pet need urgent veterinary care?
Seek urgent veterinary help for breathing difficulty, collapse, seizures, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, blood, suspected poisoning, a dosing error, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not delay emergency care while trying a calculator-generated dose.
Who should I contact for a possible pet poisoning?
Contact an emergency veterinarian or a veterinary poison service immediately. In the US, ASPCA Animal Poison Control is 888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline is 855-764-7661; fees may apply. Never induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinarian or poison specialist directs you.
