Divide your pool volume in gallons by the pump flow rate in gallons per hour (GPH) to get the hours for one full turnover. Multiply that by your daily turnover target. For example, a 20,000 gallon pool with a 3,600 GPH pump needs about 5.6 hours for one turnover per day. Two turnovers would need roughly 11.1 hours.
What is a pool turnover?
A turnover is the time it takes the pump and filter to circulate a volume of water equal to your entire pool. This calculator multiplies that time by the daily turnover target you choose. The target is a planning input, not a universal water-quality or operating requirement. Follow local rules and your pool professional's advice for your system.
How do I find my pump's flow rate in GPH?
Pump and filter specs are often listed in gallons per minute (GPM). Multiply GPM by 60 to get gallons per hour, so a 50 GPM pump moves 3,000 GPH. Your real flow is usually lower than the label because of plumbing length, fittings, and filter resistance (head loss), so treat the rated number as a best case.
How many hours a day should a pool pump run?

Can I split the run time into shorter cycles?
Yes. The total daily hours can be divided into two or more cycles across the day, such as morning and evening, and still deliver the same number of turnovers. Splitting cycles helps keep water moving and can line up with off-peak electricity rates. The total run time you need stays the same.
