Frequently Asked Questions about the Walking Pace Calculator
What counts as leisurely, moderate, brisk, and power-walking?
The calculator's internal bands label speeds under 2.5 mph as leisurely, 2.5 to 3.5 mph as moderate, 3.5 to 4.5 mph as brisk, and above 4.5 mph as power-walking. These are not CDC classification bands. CDC examples treat brisk walking at 2.5 mph or faster as moderate-intensity activity, but your actual intensity also depends on fitness, grade, and effort. Use the talk test or heart-rate response when speed alone does not match how hard the walk feels.
Is the 10,000 steps a day target science or marketing?
Marketing. The number traces to a 1965 Japanese pedometer named Manpo-kei (literally 10,000-step meter), sold by Yamasa Tokei Keiki around the time of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The character for 10,000 even looks like a person walking, which made it a tidy ad hook. The WHO and CDC never set 10,000 steps as a guideline. They recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity. Modern research (I-Min Lee, JAMA Internal Medicine 2019; Paluch et al., Lancet Public Health 2022) finds mortality benefits flatten somewhere between 7,000 and 8,000 steps per day for adults under 60 and around 6,000 to 8,000 for older adults. Treat 10,000 as a useful round target, not a magic threshold.
How accurate is MET-based calorie burn for walking?
MET mode uses a population activity value multiplied by body weight and time. It does not measure your oxygen use. Fitness, route, incline, load, temperature, and walking economy can move your actual energy use in either direction. Treat the result as a repeatable planning estimate, not a precise calorie reading.
Walking vs running for fat loss: which actually wins?
Running usually uses more energy per minute than walking at a comparable body weight, but neither activity guarantees fat loss. Your overall energy intake, total activity, recovery, health, and consistency matter more than a single workout's estimate. Choose an activity you can perform safely and sustain, then adjust your plan from longer-term trends rather than one calorie number.
Why does the stride estimate use 0.413 of height?
The calculator uses 0.413 times standing height as a fixed stride estimate when you provide height, and 2.2 ft per step when you do not. Actual stride length changes with pace, terrain, fatigue, footwear, and the person. Use a measured distance or a device calibrated to your own stride when accuracy matters.
