Frequently Asked Questions about the Weight Loss Percentage Calculator
How do you calculate weight loss percentage?
Subtract your current weight from your starting weight, divide by your starting weight, then multiply by 100. A drop from 200 lb to 180 lb is (200 - 180) / 200 x 100 = 10 percent.
What is a healthy rate of weight loss?
Most clinical guidelines put sustainable loss at 0.5 to 2 lb per week, or roughly 0.2 to 0.9 kg. Anything above 2 lb per week tends to pull from muscle and water rather than fat and is often regained. The calculator flags weekly rates above 2 lb.
Is losing 5 percent of your body weight significant?
Yes. Research on prediabetes, blood pressure, and joint pain consistently shows clinical benefits at a 5 to 10 percent loss of starting body weight. You do not need to hit an ideal weight to move the needle on health markers.
Why does my BMI drop more slowly than my weight percent?
BMI scales linearly with weight at a fixed height, so a 10 percent weight loss is a 10 percent BMI drop. The number looks smaller because BMI starts around 25 to 30, not 100. A drop from 28.7 to 25.8 BMI is the same proportion as 200 lb to 180 lb.
Is this calculator medical advice?
No. Educational use only. Discuss any weight-loss plan with your doctor, especially if you take medications, are pregnant, or have a chronic condition.
