Frequently Asked Questions about the Wilks Coefficient Calculator
What does the Wilks coefficient actually measure?
The Wilks coefficient lets you compare powerlifting totals across bodyweight and sex on a single, dimensionless scale. A 60 kg lifter who totals 400 kg and a 120 kg lifter who totals 700 kg can look very different on paper, but the Wilks score puts them in the same ballpark so meet directors can crown a Best Lifter across all weight classes. The score itself is just the coefficient (a number between roughly 0.4 and 1.2) multiplied by the total in kilograms, so the bigger the score the stronger the lifter is for their size.
Who is Robert Wilks and when was the formula published?
Robert Wilks developed the original coefficient formula in the 1990s using separate bodyweight curves. This calculator uses that historical formula. Current federations may use DOTS, IPF Points, GL Points, or another scoring system, so do not assume this result matches current meet scoring.
What is Wilks-2 and why is it not used here?
Wilks-2 uses updated coefficients and can produce different results, especially at bodyweight extremes. This calculator keeps the original formula for historical comparisons. It does not claim that original Wilks or Wilks-2 is the current standard for a particular federation.
What do the score bands mean?
The displayed bands are informal labels for this calculator, not USAPL or IPF classifications. Federation standards and scoring formulas change, and a score does not establish training age or competitive level. Compare results only when the same formula and rules are used.
Why do heavier lifters need a much higher total to match a lighter lifter's Wilks score?
Absolute strength scales roughly with bodyweight to the two-thirds power because muscle force depends on cross-sectional area while body mass grows with volume. A 100 kg lifter is not twice as strong as a 50 kg lifter, even though they weigh twice as much. The Wilks formula bakes this in: the coefficient drops sharply as bodyweight climbs, so a 140 kg lifter needs to total about 800 to 900 kg to match the Wilks score of an 80 kg lifter at 600 kg. That is why pound-for-pound rankings (and Best Lifter awards) consistently favor lifters in the 60 to 90 kg range rather than the heaviest competitors.
