Frequently Asked Questions about the ACT Score Calculator
How is the composite ACT score calculated?
For the current enhanced ACT, the Composite is the rounded average of English, Math, and Reading. Science is optional and is reported separately when taken. This calculator follows the current three-section Composite rule and accepts Science as an optional section score.
What is a good ACT score?
A score is best read against ACT's current national-rank table and each program's published policy. Percentiles are updated for new testing cohorts, and admissions ranges do not guarantee admission. Use the calculator's percentile as an estimate, then verify the official table for your test date.
What are the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks?
ACT publishes section benchmarks associated with a 50% chance of earning a B or higher in a related first-year course: English 18, Math 22, Reading 22, and Science 23. The calculator checks the three required sections and also checks Science when you enter it. Benchmarks are indicators, not placement guarantees.
Does the writing (essay) score affect the composite?
No. The writing score is reported separately on a 2 to 12 scale and does not roll into the 1 to 36 composite. Most colleges treat it as supplemental. The calculator returns a writing percentile estimate when you supply a score so you can see how it compares nationally.
Are the percentiles in this calculator exact?
They are close estimates based on the most recent published ACT National Norms. The official table is reissued each year and shifts slightly with each cohort, so use these numbers as a guide. For official reporting, check the percentile table that ACT publishes with your score report.
