Frequently Asked Questions about the TOEFL to IELTS Converter

Which TOEFL score reported after January 21, 2026 should I enter?
Current TOEFL reports use a 1 to 6 scale and, during the transition through January 2028, also show a comparable 0 to 120 overall score. Enter that comparable overall score here. Do not enter a current 1 to 6 section score in a field labeled for the former 0 to 30 section scale.
Which concordance does this TOEFL to IELTS converter use?
The converter uses the published comparison for the former TOEFL iBT 0 to 120 total and 0 to 30 section scales. Since January 21, 2026, official TOEFL reports use a 1 to 6 scale and include a comparable 0 to 120 total estimate during the transition through January 2028. Use the official report rather than reconverting its estimate.
Why does a single TOEFL score map to one IELTS band?
The published comparison groups ranges of legacy TOEFL totals under one IELTS band. The calculator therefore returns the band assigned to the range containing your score, not a precise prediction of performance on IELTS. It uses the former TOEFL 0 to 120 scale. Current TOEFL reports use a 1 to 6 scale and also provide a comparable legacy total during the transition, so check the score format before using the converter.
How does the section-level comparison differ from the overall score?
Under the legacy comparison, the same 0 to 120 total can come from different section profiles, so overall and per-skill mappings may differ. Programs may set separate skill minimums. Current TOEFL section scores use the 1 to 6 scale, which this calculator does not support.
Do US universities accept either TOEFL or IELTS?
Many do, but acceptance and minimum scores can differ by institution, school, and degree program. Do not infer acceptance from a concordance or another department's policy. Check the current official requirements before booking or sending a test.
How does legacy TOEFL 100 map to IELTS?
On the legacy comparison, TOEFL 94 to 101 maps to IELTS 7.0. That does not create a universal admissions threshold or prove readiness for every program. Current TOEFL reports use a 1 to 6 scale, and each institution sets and updates its own accepted scores.
