Frequently Asked Questions about the Percent Off Calculator
How do I calculate percent off?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100, then subtract that from the original price. For 25% off $80: savings = $80 x 0.25 = $20, so you pay $80 - $20 = $60. The calculator does this in one step and rounds the result to the nearest cent.
How much do I save at 30% off?
You save 30 cents on every dollar. Enter any original price and the calculator multiplies it by 0.30 to show your exact savings. On a $120 item that is $36 saved, leaving a final price of $84.
How do I find the percent off from old and sale prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, then multiply by 100. If an item drops from $120 to $90: ($120 - $90) / $120 x 100 = 25% off. This calculator works the other way, turning an original price and a percent into your savings and final price.
Are taxes calculated before or after the discount?
For a retailer markdown like the ones this calculator handles, sales tax usually applies to the discounted price, not the original. Rules vary by state and by discount type, since some states tax the full price when a manufacturer coupon is involved. This calculator shows only the pre-tax final price, so use a sales tax calculator to add your local rate on top.
Can I enter 0% or 100% off?
Yes. A 0% discount leaves the price unchanged, while 100% off reduces it to $0. The calculator accepts any finite percentage from 0 through 100 and rejects values outside that range. It also accepts a $0 original price. Results round to the nearest cent, so very small discounts may display as $0.00 saved.
