Frequently Asked Questions about the Pool Volume Calculator

What is a typical home pool size in gallons?
Most residential inground pools hold 15,000 to 30,000 gallons. A 16 x 32 ft rectangle with an average depth of 5 ft works out to about 19,200 gallons. A round above-ground pool (24 ft diameter, 4 ft deep) holds roughly 13,500 gallons.
Why do I need to know my pool volume?
Chemical doses for chlorine, pH adjusters, algaecide, and salt are all calibrated per gallon. Guess too low and the water stays cloudy or unsafe; guess too high and you waste product or irritate swimmers' eyes. Volume also sets the pump turnover time you need to keep the water clean.
How accurate is the pool volume estimate?
The calculator uses ideal rectangle, circle, or oval geometry and an average depth. Steps, benches, coves, freeform walls, and multiple slopes can change the actual capacity. Use the result for planning, then make chemical adjustments from water-test results and the product label.
Should I use average depth or shallow-end plus deep-end depths?
Enter shallow and deep depths for a uniformly sloped pool; the calculator uses their average. Benches, steps, coves, multiple slopes, and freeform walls can make the estimate differ from actual capacity. Start chemical adjustments conservatively and follow product instructions and water-test results.
Does pool volume change for salt water vs. chlorine pools?
No. Pool volume does not change with the sanitation method. A salt system's target concentration depends on the specific chlorine generator, so use its manual and a measured starting salt level before adding salt.
