Frequently Asked Questions about the Sod Calculator

How much sod do I need?
Measure the area in square feet (length x width for rectangles). Sod is sold by the roll, slab, or pallet. A standard slab covers about 2.66 sq ft. A pallet usually holds 450 sq ft (give or take 50 depending on the farm). Add 5-10% waste for cuts.
How much does a pallet of sod cover?
Standard pallets in the US hold around 450 sq ft (about 165 slabs at 2.66 sq ft each). Larger "big roll" pallets can hit 700-800 sq ft. The calculator lets you set pallet size to match your supplier.
When is the best time to lay sod?
Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass) install best in early fall or spring. Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine) install best in late spring through early summer when soil temperatures are 60 F+. Avoid laying in extreme heat or drought.
How much should I budget per square foot?
DIY material cost is typically $0.30-$1.00 per sq ft, depending on your region and grass type. Installation commonly adds $1-$2 per sq ft. This calculator accepts the supplier's price for one selected roll, slab, pallet, strip, or custom unit, then multiplies that price by the number of whole units required.
How do I prep the area before laying sod?
Remove existing turf or weeds, till to 4-6 inches, grade smooth with a slight slope away from buildings, add 1-2 inches of compost, level, and rake. Water thoroughly the day before delivery so roots have moist soil to bond to.
